Quiz this Friday, Test next Friday

There will be a QUIZ this Friday (Thursday for period 7) on the properties of fluids and solids vocab:

SOLIDS:
-density
-hardness
-brittleness
-elasticity
-malleability
-tensile strength

LIQUIDS:
-density
-viscosity
-buoyancy
-Archimedes' Principle


There will be a TEST next Friday on all of the concepts covered in Unit #3, including but not limited to:

-Density (including definition, units, and how to calculate it)

-Properties of Solids and Fluids (the definitions of the vocab, and how to apply that knowledge, ex: because you know the definition of tensile strength, you should be able to determine that a string has lower tensile strength that a steel cable)

-Archimedes' Principle (including knowing the units of buoyant force, understanding that the weight of the displaced fluid is equal to the apparent change of weight, and this is also equal to the buoyant force, and understanding how the shape of an object is related to buoyant force).

If you feel that you need extra help, that's great! Speak to me (Ms.Clark) about coming before or after school!

Ms. Clark's Google Classroom!!!!

The "google classroom" is very similar to sites you may be using for other classes, like edmoto and schoology. Unlike this blog, you can turn in assignments on the google classroom (with this blog, you could only view resources and leave comments).

**When you create something using your school gmail account, like a slides presentation or google doc, you can turn it in on to the google classroom easily: Click the assignment, choose the option that says "add", and you will be given options. You can use either the link that google creates for that file, or simply choose the file from your google drive.


How to Get to the Google Classroom:

1. Make sure you are logged in to the Chromebook using your school gmail address (your student # @ stamfordpublicschools.org)   ***TO access this from home, just log into your school gmail account using gmail.com

2. Type   classroom.google.com into the URL bar, or click the link in this sentence.

3. Once the page loads, scroll down and click that your are a "student".

4. Once the next page loads, find the plus sign in the upper right hand corner and click it.

5. Click "Join Class"

6. Find your class period's class code (it's written on the white board). MAKE SURE YOU USE THE CODE FOR YOUR CLASS PERIOD!

7. Click join and tada! You're in! :-D

Class Activity: week of 10/9/2015

Today you will work in groups of three or four to create a google doc or google slides presentation about density.  


Assignment Directions:

Part 1: Reviewing Your Group's Density Problem
1.) Get into your group (I will be assigning groups).
2.) Take out your "Density Worksheet".

3.) Determine which problem from the Density Worksheet is assigned to your group. 
You can find this by checking the bright green post it on your table. A picture of all of the post-its is included here  as well (table near the windows = 1+2, etc).

4.) Go over your group's question together. Make sure each group member understands how to answer the question. Check that each group member has the same answer. 

Part 2: Creating a Presentation on Your Group's Problem AND Definitions

5.) Get your Chromebooks, login, and navigate to this blog :)

6.) Have ONE group member create either a google doc, or a google slides. That group member should then share the document with the other group members. *Make sure your choose "Can Edit".

7.) Define the following terms in your google doc or slides: DENSITY, MASS, and VOLUME. You may include diagrams or pictures to make your definitions more clear and interesting!  Each group member is responsible for typing and presenting one definition. If your group has four people, the fourth person must find and explain at least one diagram or picture about density.

8.) Your group will be explaining how to solve the problem you went over from the Density Worksheet.  Each group member is responsible for typing and presenting one letter below (A-D) . 
                         Your explanation must include:
                          A.) The knowns and unknown (ex: known: V = 7mL, M = 12g; unknown: D)
                          B.) The written out FORMULA you used to solve the problem (ex: D = M/V) 
                          C.) The formula with the numbers you used WITH UNITS (ex: D = 12g / 7mL)
                          D.) The answer WITH UNITS (D = 1.71g/mL)

Part 3: Presenting and Sharing

9.) Share your presentation with me, and choose the option "Can Comment".  **If your group finishes early, then you may begin the HW (Unit #3 Outline: Solids and Fluids". Several links were posted on this blog to help you define the terms on the sheet!

10.) Present your project to the class. While other groups are presenting, you should be listening and checking your HW to see if you got the same answer as the presenting group!

Solids and Liquids: Links for Vocab

These links may be helpful to you as you research the vocabulary on the properties of solids and liquids! You may perform your own searches as well. Remember, the internet is full of bogus information, so make sure your research sources are trustworthy!

Websites That Are Likely To Contain Errors:
-personal websites made by individuals (ex: johnscoolvocab.com)
-responses listed on sites like Ask.com (anyone can post, and many posts aren't fact checked!)
-wikipedia (again, posts are not always checked for accuracy. however, this website is a great place to start your research- look at the REFERENCES listed on the bottom of the wikipedia page you're reading)

Websites That Are Normally Trustworthy:
-sites published by universities, with a ".edu" ending (ex: berkley.edu)
-government websites (.gov)
-articles or sites published by major organizations (ex: New York Times, BBC, large research companies)
-online versions of major dictionaries or  encyclopedias (ex: Britannica, Merriam-Webster...)
